About Naturopathic Modalities
Naturopathic modalities taught at Naturopathic Colleges:
Botanical Medicine: Plants have been used medicinally for thousands of years for their healing properties, and are the origins of many pharmaceutical drugs. Botanical medicines are used in both traditional herbal formulations and as phytomedicines, which are scientifically researched and formulated.
Clinical Nutrition: Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine said, “Let your food be your medicine and medicine your food.” This statement has been one of the foundations of naturopathic medicine. Many medical conditions can be improved with foods and nutritional supplements, and with fewer side effects. We truly are what we eat and a healthy diet is the foundation to a healthier lifestyle.
Homeopathy: Homeopathy is a natural health system, developed by Samuel Hahnemann in the 1840s, and is based on the principle of like cures like. Homeopathic medicines are very dilute and safe medicines that when given properly stimulate the body the heal itself. Homeopathy is about looking at you as a whole person and getting to the root cause of dis-ease. Based on your whole picture a singe remedy is chosen that best fits you.
Environmental Medicine: Our environment has thousands of more chemicals in it than one generation ago. These chemicals are in our air, soil, food supply and homes and can accumulate as toxins in our bodies. Our body can often eliminate these toxins but at times there is so much accumulation detoxification is needed to aid the body in releasing toxins. Hydrotherapy, supplementation, foods and botanicals can all be used to help the body detoxify.
Lifestyle Counseling: Lifestyle counseling includes looking at all aspects of the person, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. It includes looking at stress management, sleep, exercise, and empowering the person towards optimal health.
Physical Medicine: The art of touch, massage, reflexology, and spinal manipulation are the basic tools of Naturopathic Manipulative Therapy (NMT). It is believed that when the spine is in alignment the body can function at a more optimal level.
Oriental Medicine: Oriental medicine includes a separate Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnosis, and may use acupuncture, acupressure, reiki, qigong and cupping and oriental botanical medicines depending on the patient’s needs.
